Be Strong and Courageous: Finding Hope in Deuteronomy 31:6 During Life’s Toughest Moments

Have you ever felt like giving up when life gets too hard? Maybe you’re facing a difficult situation right now, and you wonder if God really cares about what you’re going through. As a Thai Christian woman who has walked through many valleys, I want to share something beautiful with you today. There’s a verse in the Bible that has carried me through my darkest moments and continues to fill my heart with hope.

Deuteronomy 31:6 says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” These aren’t just pretty words written thousands of years ago. They’re a living promise that speaks directly to your heart today.

Understanding the Context of God’s Promise

When Moses spoke these words, the Israelites were about to enter the Promised Land. Can you imagine how scared they must have been? They were facing unknown enemies, unfamiliar territory, and uncertain futures. Sound familiar? That’s exactly how we feel when we’re standing at the edge of big changes or facing overwhelming challenges.

Moses, their beloved leader, was about to leave them. It was like losing a father figure who had guided them through everything. Yet in this moment of transition and fear, God gave them this incredible promise through Moses.

Why This Moment Was So Important

The timing of this promise wasn’t coincidental. God knows that we need encouragement most when we’re about to step into something new or difficult. Just like a loving parent who reassures their child before the first day of school, God was preparing His people for what lay ahead.

Breaking Down the Four Key Elements

Be Strong and Courageous

Notice that God doesn’t say “feel strong and courageous.” He says “be” strong and courageous. There’s a big difference! Feelings come and go like waves on the ocean, but being strong and courageous is a choice we make regardless of how we feel.

When I face difficult days, I remind myself that courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s choosing to move forward despite the fear. Think about it like learning to ride a bicycle. You might be scared of falling, but you choose to pedal anyway.

Strength That Comes From Above

The strength God talks about isn’t physical muscle power. It’s the inner strength that comes from knowing you’re not alone. It’s the kind of strength that helps a single mother work two jobs to provide for her children, or gives someone the power to forgive when they’ve been deeply hurt.

Do Not Be Afraid or Terrified

Fear is one of our biggest enemies, isn’t it? It whispers lies in our ears and makes mountains out of molehills. But God specifically addresses our fears because He knows they can paralyze us.

In today’s world, we face so many fears. Fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of the future, fear of not being good enough. Social media doesn’t help either, constantly showing us what we think we’re missing or not achieving. But God’s command to not be afraid comes with a reason.

Modern Day Fear Fighters

I think about people like Malala Yousafzai, who continued fighting for girls’ education despite death threats. Or everyday heroes like healthcare workers during the pandemic who showed up despite their fears. They chose courage over comfort, just like God calls us to do.

The Lord Your God Goes With You

This is where the promise gets really beautiful. God doesn’t just cheer us on from the sidelines like a distant coach. He goes with us into every situation. Imagine having the most powerful, loving, wise person in the universe as your travel companion through life.

What Does It Mean That God Goes With Us?

When the Bible says God goes with us, it means He’s actively involved in our daily lives. He’s not sleeping on the job or too busy with bigger problems. Your struggles matter to Him just as much as anyone else’s.

Think about when you’re walking through a dark place with someone you love. You feel braver, don’t you? Their presence changes everything. That’s what God’s presence does for us, but even more powerfully.

Recognizing God’s Presence in Daily Life

Sometimes we miss God’s presence because we’re looking for dramatic signs. But He’s often there in the small things. The friend who calls exactly when you need to talk. The job opportunity that opens up just in time. The peace that settles in your heart during prayer.

He Will Never Leave You Nor Forsake You

This final part of the promise is like a double lock on a door. God uses two words – “leave” and “forsake” – to emphasize that He’s not going anywhere. Ever.

In our human relationships, people sometimes leave. Parents might abandon children. Spouses might walk away. Friends might disappear when times get tough. But God promises that He will never do this to us.

The Difference Between Feeling Alone and Being Alone

There’s a big difference between feeling alone and actually being alone. Sometimes we feel abandoned by God, especially during difficult seasons. But feelings aren’t facts. God’s promise stands firm regardless of our emotions.

When Life Feels Overwhelming

I remember going through a particularly difficult time when everything seemed to be falling apart. I felt so alone, even though I knew God’s promises. But looking back, I can see how He was carrying me through each day, giving me exactly what I needed to keep going.

Modern Examples of God’s Faithfulness

Let me share some real-life examples of how this promise plays out today. During the 2004 tsunami in Thailand, I witnessed incredible stories of survival and hope. People who should have died were miraculously saved. Families separated by the disaster found each other against all odds.

Stories of Courage in Everyday Life

You don’t need to survive a natural disaster to experience God’s faithfulness. Maybe you’re a student facing difficult exams, worried about your future. God goes with you into that exam room. Perhaps you’re starting a new job and feeling inadequate. God is there, giving you wisdom and confidence.

Finding God in Small Victories

Sometimes God’s presence is most evident in the small victories. The courage to have a difficult conversation. The strength to forgive someone who hurt you. The peace that comes after making a hard decision. These are all signs that God is with you.

Practical Ways to Apply This Promise

Start Your Day With This Truth

When you wake up each morning, remind yourself that God goes with you into the new day. Before you check your phone or rush into your routine, take a moment to remember His promise.

Write It Down

Put this verse somewhere you’ll see it regularly. On your bathroom mirror, in your car, as your phone wallpaper. Let it be a constant reminder of God’s faithfulness.

Share It With Others

When you see friends or family struggling with fear or uncertainty, share this promise with them. Sometimes we need others to remind us of God’s faithfulness when we can’t see it ourselves.

When Doubt Creeps In

What do you do when doubt starts whispering that God has forgotten about you? First, remember that doubt is normal. Even strong believers experience seasons of questioning. The key is not to camp out in doubt but to move through it.

Look Back at God’s Faithfulness

Keep a record of how God has shown up in your life. When new challenges arise, you can look back and remember His past faithfulness as evidence of His current presence.

The Promise for Future Generations

This promise isn’t just for the original Israelites or for us today. It’s for our children and their children. God’s faithfulness spans generations, creating a legacy of hope and courage that we can pass down.

Teaching Others About God’s Faithfulness

How can we help others understand this beautiful promise? By living it out boldly in our own lives. When people see us choosing courage over fear, they start to wonder about the source of our strength.

Conclusion: Living in the Power of His Presence

Deuteronomy 31:6 isn’t just a nice verse to cross-stitch and hang on the wall. It’s a life-changing promise that can transform how we face each day. When you truly believe that the Creator of the universe goes with you and will never abandon you, it changes everything.

Whatever you’re facing today, whether it’s big or small, remember this truth. Be strong and courageous, not because you have to figure everything out on your own, but because you’re never alone. God goes with you into every situation, every conversation, every challenge, and every victory.

The next time fear tries to paralyze you or uncertainty makes you want to give up, hold onto this promise. Let it be the anchor that keeps you steady in life’s storms and the wings that help you soar when opportunities come your way.
